With international concern about policing and a healthy turnout at a recent protest march in Kamloops, it would be appropriate for city council to discuss policing.
The first topic should be getting our very own police force. Currently, all authority over our RCMP detachment is controlled by the provincial and federal RCMP offices.
As a taxpayer, I would like to be able to discuss policing issues with a city council that pays for the service. I would like a complete explanation about why a substantial portion of our taxes go to policing. I would suggest we limit the expensive militarization of our police.
Our police departments should be primarily focused on serving and protecting our citizens. Driving around with military scale weapons and equipment seems somewhat inappropriate. I would like to see Kamloops residents be leaders and officers in a Kamloops City Police Department.
