Blazers make two picks in U.S. Prospects Draft, including goalie Calvin Vachon, Rogie's grandson

The Kamloops Blazers selected two players at the inaugural WHL U.S. Prospects Draft on Wednesday.

Kamloops picked right-shot forward Drew Stewart of Minnetonka, MIN., 14th overall and goaltender Calvin Vachon of Redondo Beach, Calif., 31st overall.

“Drew is a fun player to watch,” Blazers’ director of player personnel Robbie Sandland said in a press release. “He has a great skillset and drives play in the offensive zone. He is a creative offensive player that has great edges.”

Stewart plays for the 14-and-under AA Minnetonka Skippers.

Vachon played this season with the 14U Los Angeles Junior Kings, posting a 1.24 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in 29 games.

“Calvin is an agile goaltender with tremendous athleticism,” Sandland said. “He has great technique and a high battle level and we think he will fit in well with our organization.”

Vachon is the grandson of former NHL goaltender Rogie Vachon and the son of former Portland Winterhawks’ forward Nick Vachon.

Rogie played 17 NHL seasons, between 1966 and 1982, toiling for Montreal, Los Angeles, Detroit and Boston.

He won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goaltender in 1968 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2016.
