Merritt runner Sam running to raise money for men's counselling program in Nicola Valley

Sam raised more than $110,000 for the Nicola Valley Food Bank in June

Darius Sam has unfinished business, which he aims to finish on Dec. 5 during his Run Against Addiction.

The 20-year-old Merritt resident attempted a run of 160 kilometres in June, with a goal of raising $1,000 for the Nicola Valley Food Bank.

He racked up more than $110,000 for the food bank, but fell shy of completing the run without stopping, reaching the 143-kilometre mark after 29 hours before heading to the hospital for treatment.

Sam, who has since been training vigorously and learning more about nutrition, intends on reaching the finish line, again set at 160 kilometres, on Dec. 5.

This time, the run will raise money for a free men’s counselling program at Nicola Family Therapy, which is part of the Nicola Valley Community Human Services Association.

Sam told KTW he is an Indigenous male who suffers from fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. He wants his efforts to shed light on many forms of addiction and reduce stigma associated mental health issues in the Nicola Valley.
