Veteran quarterback Jake Laberge and a potent Vancouver Island Raiders’ offence proved too much for the Kamloops Broncos on Sunday in Chilliwack.
Laberge completed 20 of 27 passes for 348 yards and three touchdowns in a 39-7 victory over the Broncos in a B.C. Football Conference game that was originally slated to be played at Hillside Stadium.
Interior Health gathering-size restrictions were relaxed last week, but not in time for the Broncos to organize a home game on the weekend.
“He just ran around and torched us a little bit,” Broncos’ head coach Braden Vankoughnett said of Laberge.
“VI is a very talented team. They executed on big plays and those big plays ended up costing us the game.”
Cam Gregorczyk led the way offensively for the Broncos, compiling 54 yards on 17 carries and 53 yards on four receptions.
“He’s been awesome,” Vankoughnett said of the running back from Winnipeg. “He’s not very big, but he puts his shoulders down and runs hard. He makes people miss. He hits the gap hard.”
Kamloops quarterback Clark Snider completed 12 of 29 passes for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Ayden Cummins caught the touchdown pass.
Defensive back Logan Ritchie forced two fumbles and made three tackles to lead the Broncos on defence.
The Broncos are slated to travel to Vancouver Island on Saturday to play the Westshore Rebels (0-2) of Langford.
BCFC standings as of Monday: Langley Rams (2-0), Okanagan Sun of Kelowna (2-1), Valley Huskers of Chilliwack (2-1), Vancouver Island Raiders of Nanaimo (1-1), Kamloops Broncos (0-2) and Westshore Rebels (0-2).
