Zary to captain Kamloops Blazers; club names four alternates

The Kamloops Blazers on Wednesday named their leadership group for the 2021 WHL season.

Connor Zary will captain the club. Alternate captains include Montana Onyebuchi, Quinn Schmiemann, Orrin Centazzo and Logan Stankoven.

Zary, 19, is in his fourth season with the Blazers, who nabbed him in Round 2 of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

He was selected by the Calgary Flames in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft. Zary represented Canada this past winter at the World Junior Hockey Championship, winning silver.



Zary, from Saskatoon, has played in 188 games with the Blazers, compiling 73 goals and 182 points. 



Onyebuchi, a 20-year-old defenceman from Dugald, Man., is an alternate captain for the second straight season

He has 63 points in 237 WHL games.



Schmiemann, 19, was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft. In 121 career WHL games, the Wilcox, Sask., product has 65 points. 



Centazzo, 20, is in his fifth WHL season and has played 243 WHL games, racking up 77 goals and 167 points. 



Kamloops product Stankoven, 17, is the youngest of the leadership group.

Last season, he recorded 29 goals and 48 points in 59 games, tying the franchise record for most goals by a 16-year-old in a season. He is eligible for the 2021 NHL Draft.

The Blazers will open the season against the Vancouver Giants on Friday, a 7 p.m. start at Sandman Centre.
